Speed, Not Craft, Is The Essential Needed To Beat Overseas Sides
Says ARCHIE QUICK
THE CHINA MAIL, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1954,
One of the more interesting studies in sport is the reasoning of a football selector, especially a top level selector.
It is generally agreed that the main objective of the current foot- ball season is to beat Germany on December 1, at Wembley, which is, whether we like it or not, a political prestige match. The Football League and Football Association authorities therefore, very wisely, presented themselves with three early opportunities to mould an international eleven. A bit late in the day, perhaps, after eight seasons of post-war Soccer, but, nevertheless, three opportunities.
And what do they do? They play Stanley Matthews, Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney against the woefully weak Eire league in Dublin, three men upon whom they have the fullest data as to their capabilities. Apart from Johnny Haynes, youth was not "blooded" upon this heaven-sent occasion.

JAMES MASON IS MAKING $410,000 THIS YEAR OUT OF HOLLYWOOD
By MICHAEL RUDDY
I shall be very surprised if James Mason does not get an Academy, Award nomination next March.
In two magnificent films,, one of which I saw at a sneak preview, "A Star Is Born," the other I've seen in part, Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea," the Yorkshireman performs superbly.
With these two movies to his credit, Mr Mason can well afford to say, “I have quit Hollywood movies. I shall concentrate on television, as host-narrator of the Lux Viedo Theatre, and my own television company's projecta for the rest of this year."
