SIDE GLANCES By Galbraith A Cure For
The Common Cold?

Why Start
Your Letters
'Dear Sir”?
Washington.
John P. Riebel sees no sonse in starting a business lotter with "Dear Sir" when you really mean "Dear Stinker": 80 he favours dropping both the "Dear" and the "Sir" and keeping the "Stinker" part to your- self.
Riebel is an expert on business letter writing. He has written a book on it, and I understand he is writing another. I suggested he call it "Dear Stinker," "but 1 doubt whether he takes my ad- vice.
Anyhow, the authority has sent along a copy of a plece he did for a mail advertising outfit pleading for the elimination of the "Dear" and the "Sir," and cutting out the "Yours Truly" at the end.
What Riebel would like to sec at the start of every lotter is what he calls a "speedy friendly salutopening."
He gives some examples: Start out in a folksy manner like, "How are you, Mr Boget?" or "Yea, Mr Stevens" If you leave Mr Boget or Mr Stevens plumb cold without a "Sir," ac- cording to Reibel, Mr B. and Mrs S will get over it in time, even though, they may cancel a couple of orders.
Sounds oxid but maybe "Dear Sir" charactors will catch on in time. But the authority on such things get a bit deeper:
