Old dreams of a direct link between the Port of New York and the Great Lakes were revived this spring when Congress agreed to go along with Canada on the St Lawrence Seaway.

Deepening the St Lawrence River will take five years. The present 14-foot channel will be dredged to 27 feet. Eventually ocean vessels will be able to steam from Duluth through the Great Lakes down the St Lawrence and out to the Atlantic.

But those ships-primarily carrying grain exports to Europe and or imports for the steel industry-will have to churn out of the northern mouth of the St Lawrence.

American consumption of natural rubber will decline if its present price remains at current levels or increases, a leading rubber manufacturer declared here today.
