The Guards Were Cautious Saluted Everyone Wearing Bowlers: Just In Case...

London, July 12.

Colonel Mareus Lipton, a Labour MP, is protesting to the War Office that guardsmen on sentry duty have been ordered to salute everyone who passes them wearing a bowler hat and carrying a tightly rolled umbrella, traditional dress of young Guards officers when they are off duty.

The mass-circulation Dally Mirror said on Friday that the "Salute all bowlers and umbrellas" order had been given to the young Guardsmen—and to prove it they published a picture on their front page reporters, correctly garbed, being saluted.
