Move Into Lorraine

Strasbourg, June 30,

More than 5,000 miners from the largely exhausted coal-fields of southern France will this year begin moving into Lorraina, in Northeast France, as part of a vast ro- settlement plan arganised by the Franch Government and the European Cool and Stool Community.

They, will not have to search for employment in hostile and unfamiliar surround- ings: the plan provides for the free transport of the miners, their familles and belong- ings: the guarantee of comfortable houses or flats on arrival; the guarantee of a better- paid job than they held in the south, and a special "resettlement" grant ranging from 75.000 francs 1E75) for single men to 200,000 francs (£200) for those with familles.

The Socialist and Christian Trade Unions have become staunch supporters of the move, but the Communist-led Con- federation Generale du Travail is campaigning against it, alleging that miners who agree to migrat~ ing to Lorraine will work under "forced labour" conditions.
