Tang Kau, 39, who killed his 50-year-old mother, was saved from the gallows by the Full Court of Appeal this morning when it quashed his conviction of murder and sentence of death and substituted a conviction of manslaughter.

President of the Court, Acting Chief Justice, Mr Justice T. J. Gould, who sat with Mr Justice J. Reynolds, sentenced Tang to 18 years and told him "your conviction of murder is quashed by reason of an accidental defect in the summing-up of the Trial Judge, but your offence remains in the mind of this Court almost as serious as if you had suffered that full conviction. It would appear that you had only been released from prison for about two years from serving a sentence for robbery and the person who was the victim of your violence was your own mother."
