ALL AFRICA WATCHES THIS

ELECTION

Accra, Gold Coast, June 15,

For the Gold Coast today is a very important day. The people are going to the polls to elect for the first time by popular vote, 104 candidates for the Legislative Assembly. All the members elected will be Africans and they will then appoint the first all- African Cabinet.

The last Assembly had only a proportion of members elected by direct vote and included European inembers and Ministers.

The Covention People's Party led by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the Prime Minister, which has been in power since 1951 is con- testing everyone of the 101 seals. Focal point of its propaganda campaign is Dr Nkrumah himself, in private a fascinating, likable man with an infectious laugh and in public, a platform personality which is second-to-none in the country.
