THE CHINA MAIL, WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 1954,

ON JUNE 2 THE DERBY

The Blue Riband Of The Turf

By A RACING CORRESPONDENT

On June 2 will be held Britain's famous sporting event-the Derby. This race, instituted in 1780, takes its name from the great nobleman who initiated it. The founder had his reward in 1787; he won the event with "Sir Peter Tenzie." But it was not until Tommy Weston obliged on "Sansovino" in 1924 that Lord Derby won the race a second time.

To win the Derby has become the ambition of breeders, trainers, jockeys and owners the world over. Some of the Turf's most audacious betting coups have centred around It.

It was even "won" in 1844 by a fradulently-entered four-year-old, “Running Rein," masquerading us a three-year-old. The subterfuge was subsequently discovered and the race awarded to the horse that finished second, “Orlando.”

Hutton Must Not Be Left In Doubt

Says

BRUCE · HARRIS

Len Hutton, and no other, ought to captain England in the "Ashes" visit to Australia next winter. I make this assertion, with which I firmly belleve a great majority of English cricket lovers will ngree, because of a story widely circulated to a contrary effect last week.

This story is that D. S. Sheppard, rather than Hutton, may be given the most coveted appointment in English cricket. It is stated that strong influences are being exerted to induce Sheppard, now studying for the church, at Ridley Hall, Cam- bridge, to break into his training for two years, return to cricket for the English season now beginning and take command of the MCC party for Australia,

and protect it against premature old age

Ask yourself this. How much is your car worth today-how much will it be worth in 3 or 4 years' time? Will it depreciate quickly- or can you prolong its life' and value?

How your car loses value Your car is only as good as its engine. Good looks are worthless

unless accompanied by good engine performance. Engine wear is the

enemy. When your car loses 'pep' when she flags on hills-becomes 'floppy'-unresponsive-these are the warning signs. She's getting old before her time. Losing value. Money. Unfortunately engine wear is like tooth decay-you don't know it's happening until it's happened. So what can you do? You can take one simple precaution

Sheil X-100 reduces oxidation, discourages the formation of dan- gerous deposits and combats CORROSIVE ACID WEAR.

-but first, let's look at the cause of 'drain off' leaving surfaces exposed

to this biting acid action.

wear.

What causes engine wear? To some extent-friction. That is, metal rubbing on metal. Now, all good oils give protection against friction-but engines still wear out. Shell experts wanted to know why -they looked for other causes. After years of patient' research, they found that most wear in engines is caused by acid action or corrosive wear. This occurs when moisture in your engine combines with combustion gases to form acids. These acids cat-yes, eat-into the metal surfaces when the engine is running cold on sbort journeys, when your car is at rest between runs, or overnight in your garage. As an engine cools, ordinary oils

Shell research technicians worked for years to produce Shell X-100 Motor Oil.

What would you do in a case like this?

Suppose you were a car manu- facturer. Suppose you rande the Humber or the Hillman. You know you have a fae car. You want to prove it to the world. You send it on a gruelling trip, across con- tinents, mountains, ice, snow, deserts. You must put up a sen- sational performance. You must not fail. Which oil would you choose for your car?

and Ford, you would choose Shell X-100-as they did when they wanted to prove the endurance and efficiency of their cars. And re- member- most important these cars were not 'specials'—they were ordinary production cars. kind you can buy-the kind you may be driving now. Whether it was to race through 15 countries in 90 hours; hurtle round a race track for seven days and nights at over 100 m.p.h.; to win the Monte Carlo. Rally or to speed to the Cape-they relied upon Shell X-100 Motor Oil.

FACTS prove

ALKALINE

A remarkable new oil Shell X-100 Motor Oil, produced as the result of this intensive re carch into the causes of engine wear, dues three things. (1) 4 ■ combats acid action-or corrosive ■ wear by providing a constant pro- ||| tective film for all parts of your engine which does not 'drain off' like ordinary olls. (2) It reduces oxidation and lacquer formation- thus minimising ring-sticking, loss of power and oil consumption. (3) It has a cleansing effect on your engine ond keeps it clean. (I || soot in sua- || keeps combustion pension to be drained away with each oil change.)

Ease of mind-for you Never before have you been able to give your engine such complete # protection. Take this precaution Now change to Shell X-100 Motor Oil-it is more than an oil-it is an insurance against engine tocar and the premature ageing of your car.

After its 16,800-mile run in seven days and nights, the Jaguar engine was found to be in excellent condition throughout.

The same oil that you can buy at your garage today. These are facts undeniable facts. No wonder every car manufacturer in Britain endones Shell X-100 Motor Oil. If you value the life of your car, you too should be running on
