President Eisenhower had directed that "blank wall" be placed between the physicist, Dr J. Robert Oppenheimer, and any secret atomic information, pending a security investigation, the Atomic Energy Commission revealed today.

The Commission issued a statement announc- ing that in response to Dr Oppenheimer's request for a hearing, following his suspension from the post of adviser on atomic matters of the Commis- sion, a Board had been established to hear the case and advise the Commission on whether or not the suspension or clearance of Dr Oppenheimer should be made permanent.

The AEC statement said:

Diplomatic sources said today that Chinese Nationalist officials and U.S. authorities have discussed "informally" the possibility of Generalis imo Chiang Kai-shek's forces on Formosa invading the South China- mainland if the non-Communist nations find themselves involved in joint military action against the Reds in Indo-China and the rest of Southeast Asia.

They emphasised that this did not mean the inclusion of Nationalist China in the proposed "united front" pact against further Communist aggression in the area. They said an invasion by President Chiang would be "supplemental" but timed to exert maximum pressure on the Reds if the anti-Communist defence alliance leads to open warfare.
