The chemical Industry is a friend or foe, de- pending on one's viewpoint. Its genius for sub- stituting a synthetic material for a natural pro- duct antagonises one section of the population at the same time as it benefits another.
But no one has really explained why nylon, for example, is an undiluted blessing while synthe- tie rubber is a dastardly encroachment on the na- tural product's rightful field.
The controversy has reged since the end of the war. Basically, it is an extension of the dollar prob- lem. Natural rubber is the Commonwealth's 'biggest dollar earner. But its supremacy is now disputed. While the Malayan rubber plantations stood idle during the war, America built up an industry which miraculously filled the gap caused by the loss to the Allies of practically all the world's natural rubber ra-
