Algiers, Mar. 29.
The British troopship Empire Windrush, gutted by a sudden fire off Algiers yesterday, was still afloat last night after 1,424, men, women and children aboard had taken to lifeboats.

The men, women and children, mostly service. men and their families, calmly took to the boats when they were told to abandon ship.
