Suggested Action Against European Apathy

Washington, Mar. 14.

Six Representatives, members of a House armed forces committee, have proposed that the Defence Department should carry out a redeploy- ment of American troops abroad as a result of the lack of urgency apparently shown by certain countries in ratifying the European Defence Com- munity treaty.

The proposal is contained in a report drawn up by the six Representatives after a fact-finding tour of Western Europe made last autumn led by William Hess and published on Monday morning.

They also suggested more use should be made of local labour, particularly in Italy and in the American bases now under construction in Spain.
