THE CHINA'^ MAIL, SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 1954:

Should you ever strike a child?

By ELIZABETH PAKENHAM

OME of the "good things" of life are rather odd. There's that old favourite, "a good Odder still is the cry," "good smacking."

Who is it good for? Child or parent? Those in favour answer, Both. Those against say, Neither.

Personally I belong to the Noca, But I could not lay my hand on my heart and say I had never given a slap. The point is whether we do it deliberately, as part of corrective policy; or impul- sively, because we have lost our temper. Let us

survey

the arguments in favour of corporal punishment.

1

It has a long tradition be- hind it. "Spare the rod," says the proverb, "and spoil the child.“ Ít advocates force, not fatherly Ruger-wagging.

In the back room the dancers are re- hearsing, beating it out to a piano. On the walls are huge faded prints of old-time music- hall stars: Marie Lloyd, Gracie Fields, Gertie Gitana.

But this is a NEW world of music-half, and I am exploring it. For these youngsters and the jazz band in the cellar are putting together a show that could bring the 18 to 22-year-olds back to the music-hall.
