The House of Commons tonight rejected by 295 votes to 270 a defence Labour motion condemning the Government's £1,600,000,000 plans for 1954-55 after an appeal by Sir Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister, for a united front,

Labour's opposition to the defence programme was largely pinned on the provision for continued two years for conscripts. It accepted the need for adequate defence but criticised the way the money was to be spent too much on manpower and not enough on research and develop-
