"Emperor Worship" in Japan revives fears of a resurgence of Militarism
Prince
Akihito Should Fit The Role Of
The "Democratic Emperor"
Tokyo, Feb 7.
Nowhere is the conflict between the old and the new in Japan more apparent than in the Imperial household. Rumour here has it that behind the moats and battlements of the Imperial Palace, the "old guard" of the Imperial Household Board are making plans to re-establish the legend of divinity which surrounded the Emperor before Japan's defeat in World War II.
Liberal newspapers and magazines daily shout their warnings that moves are being made to turn the clock back and restore Emperor Hirohito to the deified position he held before the occupation.
They add that such a retrogressive step would help the militarists who led Japan into the Second World War back to power.

BUT EMPIRE DOES NOT WANT SYSTEM WIDENED
From Our Correspondent
London, Feb. 7.
Though he tried bravely to conceal it, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Butler was obviously not happy when he opened the Commons debate on the Commonwealth Economic Con- ference. In defending the doctrine laid down at Sydney he was forced into an invidious position— for a Tory Chancellor-of having to play down what many
people still regard as the very fundamentals of a policy for Commonwealth Economic expansion,
His embarrassment was increased by the fact that the Randall Commission's report coming on top of an American recéssion has failed to recom- mend the sort of "good creditor" policies for America that are generally regarded as essential if the sterling area's plan for freer trade and pay- ments is to be carried into effect.

From Our Correspondent
London, Feb. 7.
The London Stock Exchange goes from strength to strength. Industrial shares rose day by day last week and now stand within the shade of their all-time peak as measured by the Financial Times index.
The gilt-edged market was neglected while investors concentrated on a search for bargains in the industrial section. But Friday's news of a reduction in the American Bank rate brought in buyers on the hope that British authorities would follow suit. Gains of up to 8/9 were registered.
One of the most surprising features of the boom in indus trial shares was the big rize in textile issues after these had been marked down earlier in the week on a somewhat alarmist Interpretation
of the Anglo-
