Early Bush Pilots Were Daring Men Who Chased the Unknown

ANADA'S bush pilote ara a legend. Their skill and daring has made. the name "bush pilot" as famous as that of Captain Kidd, Marco Polo or Columbus..

For like the earlier ad- venturers, Canada's first bush pilots headed out for strange,, unknown and dan- gerous places. Flying flimsy kites, they soared over vir- forests and swift gin waters.

In 1919 pilots with war experience went home to Canada, looking for new jobs, and started exploring Canada's vast Northland. Before the advent of the aeroplane, the wilderness that is

northern Canada could be explored only with great difficulty. Canada is a land of great wealth, but owing to its widely scat tered population it wasn't truly opened up until the bush pilota took to the skies and chased the un- known.

Guided only by instinct and ordinary magnet com- Canada's daring pass, young men during the early 'twenties flew thousands of miles over swamp, prairie, mountain and dense forest.

They

flew over uncharted ndica of wilderness; through blizzards and sub-zero walier. They made rough landing fields, using sparse equipment.
