Police today disclosed that a smooth-talking character nearly got away with a slick television trick to kidnap a bank executive's wife and child for $20,000 ransom.

The plot failed only because the intended victim, Mrs Dorothy King, was able to resist the lure of a TV quiz show prize long enough to make a quick check with the TV station.
