The story of the opern is concerned with the later years of the reign of the first Queen Eliza beth, her faith and hope in the Earl of Essex, her disillusionment, and her realisation that if Essex was not to usurp her own power she must break instead of make him. The cast was led by Joanna Joseph Keibert Ja Cross as Queen Elizabeth I and Peter Pears as Essex, with Frederick Dalberg as Sir Walter David Violini with Stati Raleigh and Arnold Matters as Sir Robert Cecil.

The BBC recorded this historic first performance of "Gloriana" and complete recordings have now been received by Radio Honghong. The entire opera will he broadcast here on Thursday night from 8.30 until 11.35..
