SERIES

By LEO PETERSON

New York, Oct. 1. The New York Yankees, striving for a history-making fifth World Series Championship, got off to a flying start today by defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers 9-5 in the first game of the best-of-seven series.

The Yankees exploded for four runs in the first inning on two triples and three hases on balls, then relied on first baseman Joe Collins' seventh inning homer to break a 5-5 tis and wrap up their triumph.

Collies, left-handed swinging Polish thugger with an Irish Ian's name, leaned into one of pitcher Clen Labine's plichts and slammed the ball high into the right-feld stands. It was Collins first bit in the last 18 Umes he has batted in World Series competition.
