DON COCKELL – FARMER

THE CHINA MAIL, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1953.

Part of the £6,000 purse which Don Cockell. British Heavyweight Boxing Champion, received from his victory over Harry Matthews in the United States recently has been spent on additional stock for Diamond Farm, Horam, Sussex, of which Don Cockell is the proud owner.

He is a very keen farmer and spends all his time between fights "down on the farm", where his life as Don Cockell. farmer, helps to keep him fit for his other self, Don Cockell, boxer.

The photograph shows Cockell alop a haystack on his farm busily stacking hay, "assisted" by his six-year-old son, Pat, with Bob, his Labrador dog.

Some go abroad to earn a living, Most, whether amateur or professional, come back: poorer in pocket but richer in experience, and with tourist recollections which make victory or defeat in competitive games, and the cost of it, merely in cidental to the trip.

They travel as Individuals, as squads, as tennis. And they like It. Once having filled the role of "International", their one destre is to maintain a standard which will ensure selection for another trip.
