ful about his contract. He could count on winning two spades, three hearts, and prob ably only one club. It looked as though his contract depend- ed on winning three diamond tricks.
West opened the lue ot spades, and dummy won with the king. South hopefully led Jow diamond from the dummy, nasi Enst stepped up with the ave.

This unusual play stimulated South Into serious thought. East was too good a player to throw uwny his ace of diamonds on a small card unless he couldnt help himself. South knew that the diamond suit was hopeless if East started with a singleton ace of diamonds; but there was a chance if East had only the doubleton ace-jack.
With this thought in mind, South carefully dropped the ten of diamonds under East's nee. East promptly returned a spade to dummy's ace, and declarer -led-another-low-diamond-from
dummy to his own king.
The fall of the Juck of dia- monds from the East hand was exactly what South had been hoping for. Now he could lead the carefully preserved four of diamonds and win a finesse in dummy with the eight of dia- monds. This left him in posi- tion to cush dummy's queen of diamonds, after which It was easy to fulfil the contract.
South would have gone down if he had failed to discard the ten of diamonds. He could win the second round of Wainends with his king but would then have to win the third diamond with his ten. There would be no way to reach dummy's queca of diamonds, since to overtake the ten with dummy's queen would merely establish West's
