BEST EMPIRE ATHLETIC

PERFORMANCES

The Australlan athletic scason that came to an end recently was noteworthy for the achievements of the remarkable miler, John Lùndy, but the general track standard in Australla, also, has gone up by leaps and bounds, particularly in the sprints. In one race toward the end of the season, six men were timed in between 9,5 and 9.8 seconds in one race.

Marks in the South African and New Zealand seasons, have been relatively poor, but some fast sprint marks have been returned in the early Indian

and Ceylon

seasons.

Race Gangs

Racing was more fun in the old days when money was money and not just n symbol, but at least it is now safe to go on any racecourse. That was not always the case.

Indirectly, I was instrumental in introducing the Jockey Club police force, who finally wiped out "the boys."

Just after the 1914-18 war a gang of toughs decided there was easy money to be got on the racecourses. It was lite rally "daylight robbery."

One day, after the last race on the July course at Newmarket, there was a scramble for the buses and taxis taking visitors to the town and station.

THE CRUEL SEA Is

A Cruel Picture,

But Presented With Honesty

Says PAUL DEHN

The Cruel Sea is a cruel picture. By this I mean that Ealing has faced the circumstances of our Navy in wartime with an honesty which makes even the book look prettified and all other Navy pictures downright namby-pamby.

When sallors dive from a sinking ship into the Atlantic, they don't swim silently. They cough and retch.

The picture shows them coughing and retching.

When torpedo survivors are brought on board, they don't fall gracefully into hot blankets and sip their rum with happy smiles. They often bleed." below decks, and die.
