Canberra, Mar. 18.

The Cabinet, it was learned authoritatively today, rejected a plon to turn troops out of barracks in Melbourne to make room for athletes coming to the 1950 Olymple Games.

Mr Ferey W. Nette, Organis- ing Secretary of the

SO MAD-THE BIG SUMS ARE PAID FOR VITAL COGS

Says TOM FINNEY

When Tommy Taylor left his native Barnsley for Manchester United, a large body of opinion thought the transfer market was going mad. A fee reported to be in the region of £30,000 was a great deal of money for a lad not yet 21. Yet Mr Matt Busby, United's manager who. paid out this huge cheque, is one of the shrewdest men in the game. Make no mistake! There is considerable method in his apparent madness.

First of all the cost to the First Division club is nothing like £30,000. One. manager friend of mine who was offering in the region of £25,000 for Taylor ex- plained it this way. "We are showing a fair profil on the scason," he said, “I have sold a player or two and the gates have been good. Our financial year ends soon-and unless we spend some of the cash it will go to the Government in tax."

Doubtless Mr Busby rates + similar fashion. Taylor in United's proven style must be continued. Jack Rowley, Stan Pearson and Co. cannot go on for ever. Assuming a football life of 12 seasons. Taylor will not rank as a terribly costly replace- ment at £2,500 per annum.

Indeed the only thing I can And wrong in the transaction is that young Tommy is only JOHNNY BROOKS ANOTHER | £10 better off as a result. Ás you perhaps know, I think that
