TRADE COMMISSIONERS EMPHASISE FAR EAST MARKET POTENTIALITIES

From H. King Wood

Sydney, Mar. 13.

Australia had immense potential markets in the Far East but ex- porters would have to make goods available regularly and in competi- tion with world prices, two Trade Commissioners warned this week. The Trade Commissioners are Mr H. S. Sullivan, of Hongkong, and Mr A. J. Day, of Malaya. Their report was released in a Government journal.

Mr Day said Australia had developed a poor name in Malaya be- cause of some exporters' activities immediately after the war. He said the Singapore Government admitted most Australian imports free of Customs duty and the Malayan Government gave Australian goods preferential tariff treatment.

Australia's market for canned vegetables and fruit was suffering by competition from South Africa, ho added.
