Mr Malenkov in his speech today took on the mantle of Stalin as a conciliator. It was in strik- |ing contrast to a speech he made only last October when he accused American leaders of “deliberately aggravating world tension"-one of the most un- compromising statements ever delivered by a

He still leaves the world guessing whether he would be prepared to take up President Eisen- hower's invitation to meet and talk with him.

But by reiterating emphatically the peace aims of Soviet policy, he implied that co-operation can continue between "capitalist" and the "Socialist" camps. This was always the Stalin line.

There is no doubt that Mr Malenkov wanted to. allay world fear that Stalin's death might heighten world tension and increase the risk of war.

Cairo, Mar. 15. The Egyptian Premier, General Mohammed Naguib, conferred with the British and American Ambassadors today in preparation for a formal attempt to resolve the deadlock over the future of the strategic Suez Canal Zone.

The British Ambassador, Sir Ralph Stevenson, and the United States Ambassador, Mr Jefferson Caffery, were also joined by the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Fawzi.
