THE CHINA MAIL, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1958.

This snap with about 400 yards to go in the open Mite at the University Sports showe Mike Curzon taking the lead from Derek Coburn, Colony record- holder over 1,500 and 5,000 Metres, and “Paddy” McMahon, Colony Champion at 800 and 1,500 Metres and record-holder in the Mile.

Mike was at this stage panting like a grampus, but he surprised all by finishing within two yards of "Paddy” and ahead of Derek.

The next day, to demonstrate that it was no fluke, he beat fastest 1,500 Metres time at Caroline HIIL-China Mail Photo.

WHO STOLE

STOLE THE SHOW?-

CURZON, COBURN, HALL, HART OR WALLER?

By "RECORDER"

There were two big athletic meets over the week-end and with' them came one of the greatest battles ever seen here in the spotlight- stealing game. There was "Paddy" McMahon's farewell race in the Colony to begin with-a great one that saw Derek Coburn run five laps without a shoe (lost early on in the race) and get nipped for second place by an unheralded newcomer to the miling ranks, Mike Curzon. "Paddy" won by two yards, with less than three yards between Curzon and Coburn. .

Shortly afterwards, the three Jumping H's attacked the Colony Long Jump record in the University pit at Pokfulam and Rita Hall emerged the winner with new mark of 15 feet 10 inches. Deborah Hurlbait cleared 15 feet 6 inches and Jennifer Hart 15 feet 5 inches all well beyond their previous best.

Lt. Reep of the Dorsets put in the first bid with a Pole Vault of 10 feet 6 inches, cqualling the third best performance in the Colony's history.

First reaction in British racing circles to the news that the Aga Khan had sold his record breaker Tulyar to the Irish National Stud was a sense of relief that he had not been allowed to follow so many other outstanding stallions to the United States.
