How many sportsmen have achieved world records after reaching the age of slippered ease? Fifty-one-year-old Joe Davis, button-nosed master of the baize, gives himself "a month or six weeks" to complete his 200th century snooker break-a performance unlikely to be surpassed in this or any other age.

"I have remained at 490 since before Christmas, and it is getting a-bit of a strain,” Davis told me before stepping smartly back to the two-hour daily practice session to which he has disciplined himself for the last quarter of a century.
