KING OF THE BARREL JUMPERS

Nothing Like A Cup Winner's Medal

AS BILLY

BILLY WRIGHT SAID: "I NEVER THOUGHT A MAN

COULD BE SO

HAPPY"

By TOM FINNEY

As you look through the results of FA Cup battles up and down the country, make a mental note of the famous names who once again have lust the chance to win the finest of all Soccer honours.

Make no mistake. The summit of every football professional's ambition is to walk up to the Royal Box in Wembley's great bowl to be given a Cup Winner's medal by the Queen or another high member of our Royal Family. My friend Billy Wright put it in a nutshell. After the late King had handed him the silver trophy in 1949, the England captain said "I never thought a man could be so happy."

That applies to every man in the sile. Many our greatest football names, hulders of dozens of international cups, have left the game without fulfilling this

Britain's Athletes Are

Better

Than Ever

Says HAROLD ABRAHAMS

(Winner of the 100 Metres at the 1924 Olympic Games)

The all-round standard of athletics in Britain today is inônitely higher than It has even been. The past season was surely our best ever.

1 find the evidence in a comparison of British performances in 1952 with any previous year.

A comparison of British athletics in relation to world athletics in 1952 with, say, my Olympic year of 1924 is not the point. The fact that we won three Olym pic medals in 1924 and none in 1952 muy prove that our runners in 1924 were better, in the international field, than they are today, though I do not think it proves any such thing.

But you can establish whether | British athletics is on the down- ward path only by comparing like with like--namely British Britiali standards today with standards of yesterday.
