FRIEND of mine came to me several days ago. and told me his son was eager to try developing and printing his pictures. "He's used a camera for the past few years...my friend sald, "and he enjoys it, But I can't quité seo selting_up n darkroom for him now. Who knows if his interest will hold?"

So I made a suggestion. to him....one that holds good for every canus-snapshooter who, feels he'd like to try his hand af darkroom work. I said to him, "Why not start your boy making prints in your kitchen?

Sce how, he likes it and if he wants- to further, then think about

A darkroom."”.

the

Going on, I explained that in pust year a photographlo paper has been developed which doesn't call for a darkroom. You can make contact prints from this paper under normal arti- ficial lighting. In fact, you can actually develop your prints safely with a 50-wait lamp only four feet away. Although there's no need to try it.

All that's needed to make a print with this paper is a print- ing frame and a No. 1 Photoffood The negative and print are in the frame, and exposed to the Photoflood lamp for a period of-about-two or three seconds, Then the print is developed and fixed by common photographle methods.

To make it oven caster,! It is Dow possible to buy chemicals for mixing developer, stop bath. and fixer, in a three-way single packet which contains the proper

quantity needed for handling about 50 prints 2x3% inches. Directions on the pack give full Instructions and you need only tear a corner from ons of the envelopes, mix the contents with water, and you have the chemical you

want.

In short, as I told my friend, there's no need for Investing a lot of money or loading up with a lot of equipment. If you fust want to try contact printing. Anyone who thinks he would. like to work in D darkronm should start qt this point. For mistakes in a print are easily rectified; a second print always can be mado, ut mistakes in developing negatives can cost you the piclurb you've'mad"-So naturally, developing one's own Begaliven is a second stop, preferably one that should bo trlod only after printing has been mastered, to DOW
