Nat Lofthouse Is Britain's Sportsman Of The Year

AN EXCEPTION IN A YEAR OF GALLANT FAILURES

London.

Which British sportsman did most for his country in 1952? In a gala year highlighted by the greatest-ever Olympic Games this might seer a difficult question. But, unfortunately for the British sports fan, it is not.

For few world honours came to rest within these shores. Despite the heroie efforts of athletes like Chris Chataway, John Disley and McDonald Bulley, Britain owés her one Helsinki' gold medal to three horses. It is a similar story in other sports, gallant failures.

1953 IS VERY PROFESSIONAL YEAR

With the passing of an amateur year-didn't it begin with Jean- nette Altwegg winning an Olympic skating title and end with Les Driffield collecting a world billiards crown?-we turn our faces towards 1953, which, I suggest, is going to be a very professional year.

I foresee more and more screaming about the, shamateurs in many sports until we approach a good deal nearer to the day when performers on the sporting fields will be either amateurs or professionals, with none of that in-between-and, in the majority of cases, I hope, just good, honest professionals, proud to play and proud to take, in the open, what they can get for doing.It.
