LIMELIGHT AGAIN

From H. KING WOOD

Sydney, Dec. 25.

This week the Australian press has brought hack to life the old controversy about Broken Hill

New South Wales' outlaw town.

For years it has been known and tacitly acknowledged in official quarters that Broken Hill has had an "open go" -late closing of hotels and seven-day week trading, organised two-up schools starting price bookmakers and all those other "vices" which characters in other parts of the Commonwealth are told are-demoralising and therefore not allowed.

Just to pat you in the picture - drinking laws in most other States are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Queensland 8 p.m.); two-up is an illegal game and starting price booking not allowed).

Submitting that the crime was an inside job, Crown Counsel prosecuted two men, accused of robbery with aggravation, before the Puisne Judge, Mr Justice C. W. Reece, in the Criminal Sessions this morning.

The accused, Yan Chi-sum, alias Yan Luen, 25, and Chan Yuk-man, 18, textile worker, are indicted for having robbed Wong Wing-lin, head- master of the Literary English School, Nos. 8-10 Shan Pin- Lane, Wanchai, of a fountain pen, a pro- pelling pencil, an Omega wrist watch with gold band, an Omega pocket watch, a Movado metal wrist watch, and HK$5,707 in cash, at the School on October 3 last,

The second accused is additionally charged with re- ceiving a Movado wrist watch, an Omega wrist watch with gold band, a fountain pen and a propelling pencil, knowing them to have been stolen,

The Crown alleged that first nectised was

The Federal Government, ap- parently, realising that lines aren't what they used to be, has cut the 1953 immigration pro- gramme from $50,000 to 10,000.

The British migrant target is left more or less untouched, but the number. from European countries is to be drastically reduced.

Police Sub-Inspector Chan Hon-cheung, alias Chan Ka-ho, alia's Charles Chan, 28, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of arms and ammunition at Kowloon this morning when he appeared on re- mand and was sentenced to 12 months by Mr D. F. O'Reilly Mayne.

The Police Officer was charged with the possession of one 32 revolver, 73 rounds of 38 ammunition, one .303 rifle and six rounds of .22 rifle ammunition, and three empty cartridge cases of 38 calibre. He pleaded guilty
