SUICIDE

Ignores Pleadings Of Friends

Sweetwater, Texas, Dec. 28.

A sobbing young rancher committed suicide today by crashing his aeroplane, after circling for more than four hours while friends and the authorities pleaded with him in dramatic radio messages not to do it.

Sheriff Calvin Montgomery said William Cox, 23, whose wife is expecting a child in six weeks, deliberately crashed his light two-seater plane 500 yards from a gravel pit on the edge of Sweetwater. He was killed instantly.

Gift To Britain

The Hongkong Government is to make a New Year GUI of half a million pounds; (HK$8,000,000) to Great Britain as a priclical" expresiion" of the Colony's loyalty to Har Majesty the Queen, and to help to relieve "the heavy expenditure-being, incurred by Her Majesty's Government In the United Kingdom on the defence of the free world and on the reinforcement.of the garrison of this Colony."

The Hon Financial Secretary, Mr A. G. Clarke, will move a resolution giving the formal approval of Legislative Counell to this gift when the Council meets in the afternoon of New Year's Eye. The proposal aiready has the unofficial sanctions of members.

The sum of $8,000,000′ is additional to the $18,000,000 already contributed to the cost of reinforcing the Colony's garrison, making the Colony's total contribution 134 million pounds in the current financial year,
