Why we say Hotch- potch..

Undoubtedly this phrase owes a great deal to its odd sound, but it has meaning too, for it comes from the French "hochepot” --- bocher" to shake to- gether, and "pot," in a pot. Thus hotch-potch, or hodge-podge, means a mixture of things in a pot.
