Mrs Vijaya Pandit, leader of the Indian delegation, claimed today that South Africa's racial segregation policy had "created a new and dangerous tension which is fraught with serious. consequences for har- mony among nations and the peace of the world."

She was speaking in a debate in the Special (Ad Hoc) Political Committee after the South African delegate, Mr G. P. Jooste, had chal- lenged the right of the United Nations to discuss the matter.

Mre Pandit said the South African Apartheid policy "not only stitutes a flagrant violation of the basic principles of human rights and funda- mental freedoms which are enshrined in the Charter, to which all of us member states of the United Nations have subscribed, but also a growing threat to in- ternational peace."

The Cabinet has approved Britain's new atom age defence plan and its outlines will be made known to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation shortly, a Government spokesman said today.
