FORGOTTEN MAN OF BRITISH FOOTBALL IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE COACH
By TOM FINNEY
(England and Preston North End Outside Right)
The forgotten man of British football is undoubtedly the coach. I was reminded of this very forcibly at Deepdale on the Saturday when Man- chester United-said by some to be on the slide beat my own club, Preston North End, by five goals to nil.
United had previously wan but three of their dozen games. Many of their supporters thought that a long summer tour of America had left the team stale. It didn't seem that way to us as four goals went past Malcolm Newlands in the first 20 minutes. But Jack Rowley, Johnny Carey, returned to right-back, Stan Pearson and the rest produced delightful football. The moves were mechanical as they swept from their own penalty-area to our goalmouth.

The manager's position has changed very much since the wur. Once he could spend most of his time with his staff out on the pitch. Now he is tied to the office desk for long hours sifting- through scouting reports and many other organisation res" ponsibilities.

In America even the top-class horses run far more often than do their counterparts in Britain. Our top-ranking filly, Bebe Grande, has run more often than is usual for such a high-class racehorse, yet she has been out only nine times.
