Procedure

Mr K. M. A. Barnett, Chairman of the Urban Council, was questioned this morning by Mr Percy Chen, member of a Compensation Board dealing with 122 lots of land in Tung Tau village resumed by the Crown, regarding the procedure for erection of huts in resettlement areas.

The Board resumed its hearing at the Supreme Court to decide on the amount of compensation to be paid to former owners of the land which was razed by fire last year.

Mr Justice Reece is chairman of the Board with Mr A. V. Currie, Chartered Surveyor and Acting Commissioner of Rating and Valuation (nominated by HE the Governor). Mr Chen the other member of the Board was nominated by the former owners.

Mr Barnett said that In the original resettlement scheme in 1948 a hut for a family of five cost approximately $300. This had a living room 13 by 13, and a kitchen of brick, four by four. The price of timber rose because of the shortage and last year the cost of one of these huis was about $2,000.
