Britain and America are pioneering atómic energy research aimed at producing electric power us cheaply as if produced from coal, costing only 31⁄2 pence a ton.

This was revealed here today by the United Nations Economie Commission for Europe in a report on "prospects opened up by technical ad- vances in electric power production."

The Commission states. that the harnessing of atomic energy.for the production of electric power is by far the most important factor in the industry's future.

It ndds: "So, far as potential Chergy is concerned, experts state that one kilogram of pure tranium completely utilised would be tquivalent to 2,000 to 3,000 tons of normal quality

"The cost of uranium (1050), about £15 per kilogram, is equivalent in relatioit to its re- turn to coal prices al about a 11⁄2d, per ton.

"If it could be used for the same purpose, hydrogen would furnish a fuel ten times as sum- cient on a weight for weight basis as uranlum."

The commission lists four basic problems facing atamic electric power plant designers. -
