PUTTING WINS MATCHES- SOME ESSENTIAL RULES

By MAX FAULKNER

It is often argued that you have to be born a good putter to be able to get

, the ball down the hole consistently well. I think there is something in this conten- tir, Some people do seem to break all the rules of good striking and still slap the ball into the tin with uncanny regularity,

But those people, in the main, are the exceptions. All the really good, top- class putters have applied method to this vital part of their game. They havo found that instinct, or touch, isn't reliable enough for consistency.

THE✨ CHINA, MAIL, SATURDAY, AUGUST 9, 1952.*

And my point here, this week, is to adviso you especially those who feel notoriously bad on the greens—to apply a littlo thought and method to your put- ting. You can improve it one hundred per cent.

In my career I have tried every conceivable method. I'va crouch- ed low over the ball, I've struck of my back foot, I've struck from the centre of my feet, with my feet close, and my feet apart. All the time I have been search-

ing for the stance that suits me best. For of all the strokes in this great game probably the one with the pulter is the most in- dividual. Even so, there

are

| certain essential rules.

Today, for instance, I use a long putter. I use it deliberate- ly to stop me from crouching, and to achieve a steady pactness with my arms close to my body and the whole balance

ONE SECRET OF PUTTING '

I take great care about lining

| up for the putt and always strike the ball off the left toe. This, I feel, la one of the secrets of good putting. Striking off the front ce means that the ball is struck on the up-stroke. This imparts slight overspin, which helps the ball to travel well and carry straight.

If one strikes too much off the right foot the tendency fs- to hit down on the ball; under pressure, this tends to produce u alight jump which may tale. it off line. It certainly tends 10 check its run and usually leaves too many putts short of the hole.
