London, Aug. 4. The Australian Olymple ayartet broke the women's world record for the 440 yards relay event at the Inter- national Athletics meeting at the White City Stadium here this afternoon.
Shirley Strickland, Vernu Johnston, Winsome Cripps and Marjorle Jackson won the race in 46.8 seconds. This bettered the previous worki record of 40.9 seconds set up by a South African team at Pretoria in 1951 and equalled by Australia at White City here last July.
They won by four yards from the old world record with 1 min. the United States, who won the 40.4 secs, which, however, could Olympic 400 metres relay at get them no better than third Helsinki after the crack Aus- place. trallon team had dropped the balon.
The Americans also bettered with a time the world record of 48.7 seconds. Britain
was third.
