MOTION LOST

Heated Debate In The

House

Of Commons

CHURCHILL ACCUSED OF BEING VAGUE

London, July 30.

Mr Winston Churchill's Conservative Government tonight defeated the Socialist Opposition's censure of its handling of Britain's. economic crisis by 302 votes to 277. The House of Comnions then passed the Government's motion approving the steps being taken to solve Britain's problems by 299 votes to 277 a Government majority of 22.

The House voted after hearing an array of speakers, including Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Labour Opposition leader, Mr Clement Attlee:

Opening the final stage of the two-day debate, Mr Churchill announced that Britain's rearmament programme was being spun out to prevent it crushing the country's economy.

But he said that although Britain was trimming the three-year £4,700 ita defence million programme drawn up by the former Labour Government, spending in four years would exceed the original three-year allocation.

"There can be no assurance of lasting military strength without a firm without economic economic foundation and no defence programme can stand rosources to carry it through," he said.
