THE CHINA MAIL, FRIDAY, JULY 18, 1952.

THE JAMAICANS ARE NOT AS FAST AS WAS THE POWDERHALL FLASH

By "RECORDER"

The fastest man in the history of modern athletics — many autho- rities still hold the view-was Harry Hutchins, the Powderhall sprinter of the late Victorian era.

Hutchins was a professional and the races he ran were nearly all handicap races over odd distances such as 130 yards and 170 yards.

One of his most remarkable fents was the 800 Yarda flat in 30 seconds, dend and at the White City on July 5 the three great Jamaican quarter-milers, George Rhoden, Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint, had a go at this distance.

The result was:-Rhoden, 30.4) Chris Brasher (England)

Record or near - record times made recently in various parts of the world by athletes with Olympic aspirations have led

many people to the opinion that these athletes have reached their peak too

and have lessened their chances at Helsinki. ·

soon

I don't think so. I believe that once an athlete has pre- pared himself physically and | mentally for a season of com- petition, there should be little need for holding back the reins In preliminary trials.

For proof, look at Emil Zato- Pek, the Czech human locomo- tive, who has set up the record 40: di 40:42 after another without showing

any sign of falling back.
