Revision Advocated
Manila, July 9.
The Commerce Secretary, Cornello Balmaceda, today came out openly in favour of revision of the free trade
between agreement
the United States and the Philippines as the "only way to accelerate industrial de- velopment, lower the cost of living and place the Philip- pines economy on a broader, healthier, and more stable basis."
Mr Balmaceda disclosed that he wus against any extension or the present. frea tratte arrangements between the two countries.
He pointed out that such arrangements "have proved to be a serious deterrent to the growth and successful develop- ment of local intlustries,"

He explained further that "free
trade not only Indo the present agricultural export which has economy trated production in crops that are dependent on the foreign market but has also prevented the growth of Philip- pine Industries that could not compete with duty-free Ameri. can-manufactured products thut gained a monopoly of our domes-
le market."
Mr Balmaceda is the latest of Government business' and econo- mle experts to favour revision of the Philippine-United States Trade Agreement.
Under this agreement, limited quantities of speelded. Philip- pino products can enter the United States duly-free American goods of any quantity and any kind may enter the Philippines

The influential daily Asahi today called for positive and continued efforts on the part of the Government to pave the way for Japan's rapid participation in Southeast Asian development programmes.
In an editorial devoted to the remarks of the British Commissioner-General, Malcolm Mac- Donald, made at his Press conference on Tuesday, the Asahi said that the Japanese people should ponder the true meaning of his remarks with EXCHANGES objectivity.
The editorial said that the Commissioner-General's remarks, prone to be taken by the Japanese as ex- pressing the "prejudices of British intorcato in South- east Asia” wore candid and reasonable.
