COMMONWEALTH NATIONS NOT SENDING LARGE TEAMS TO HELSINKI

By "RECORDER"

The nations of the British Commonwealth will not be well re- presented numerically at Helsinki in the track and field events. Aus- tralia is sending only eight athletes, New Zealand' four and Inḍia eight. South Africa at last reports was planning to send 13. Pakistan is plan- ning to send four:

A surprise decision was that of Nigeria, who plan to send eight. The Nigerians made the front pages recently in journals devoted to athletics when there was a four-way'tle for first place in the high jump at their Championships at Lagos on April 5 at the very respectable height of G feet 6 inches.

The winner of the event was O. Od obo, who had no failures up to 6 feet 7 inches. If he had cleared that height, he would have been jumping a foot higher- than his own height. This is not an amazing fact in itself as smaller Japancao have gone up to 6 feet 6 inches, but it is surprising enough to learn that neither he nor two of the three others who cleared 6.6 have any knowledge of high jump techniques.
