A midweek spate of rumours, all contributing towards a general decline of confidence, started a sharp downward movement of gilt-edged prices which quickly contributed itself to other sections of the Stock Ex change.

The fall of gilt-edged values began in earnest on Wednesday, gathered momentum on Thursday and continued at a slower pace on Friday, when prices 'closed at the lowest of the week.
