No Visible Signs

Of Slump HK Says Chairman

So far as Caldbeck, Macgregor & Co., Ltd., were concerned there were no visible signs in Hongkong of a business slump, said Mr J. F. Macgregor when he presided at the annual meet- ing of the company this morning.

But in Shanghai there was a different story, he revealed, and it was the intention to close down the Shanghai branch as soon as permission was obtained from the People's Government of China to do so.

A

dividend of three shillings per share and a bonus of one shilling a share were declared.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Macgregor said:

Living Language

Why we say A rift in the lute.t

A "rift" comes fairly obviously from "rive" meaning to 'cleave" or split, but the word "late" does not here mean the musical instrument. It comes from the Latin "lutum" meaning clay and "lute" was the name once given to a apccial compound-for sealing furnaces or re- toris. Where there was

"rift in the lule” gases began to escape and the work was

n

ruined. So now the phrase means the first evidence of a brenk in friendship.
