REPORTED
UNHARMED: WRITES A LETTER TO HQ
Seoul, May 9.
General Matthew B. Ridgway today (Friday) instructed the Eighth Army "to take whatever action is required and to use whatever force is necessary" to free Brigadier-General Francis T. Dodd, a prisoner of the Communists on Koje Island. Gen. Ridgway handed these instructions to General James A. Van Fleet, Eighth Army Commander, shortly before the Supreme Allied Commander left Korea for the last time:-·
Ridgway said these orders would be in effect to prevent any such incidents occurring in the future.
Gen. Ridgway, who leaves on Monday from Tokyo to assume his command as head of NATO in Europe, called the seizure of Dodd "a flagrant" disregard for authority.
"I have little if anything to add to those details which have already been released by the Eighth Army,” Gen, Ridgway said.
He said that the United Nations have given the Communist pri- soners on Koje Island fair treatment and will continue to do so. - Associated Press,
