Company's Extension Of Services

The Hongkong Telephone Company has available and is now con recting up 2,000 new lines, while delivery of equipment for a further 3,000 lines is awaited. This was revealed at the annual meeting of the company held this morning at Telephone House,

Mr W. A. Stewart, the Chair.nan, in a review of the company's activities and future plans, said that new services provided during the year were 2,530 direct exchange lines and 2,204 extensions as against 1,066 and 1,266 respectively for the previous year.

Referring to subscription rates, Mr Stewart said they were the lowest in the world. While costs have increased four to five times since the war, cost of the service to subscribers had increased only 50 per cent. He warned how- ever, that with the prospect of a serious decline in income from Radio Services, it would be necessary to consider very seriously an increase subscription rates..

*

The Chairman disclosed that the nei profit for the year was $2,481,445, and payment of dividend of $1.40 tax free was recommended.

Addressing the meeting the Chairman said:
