SCHOOLS HAVE A CLEAN SWEEP SO FAR OF COLONY CHAMPIONSHIPS

By "RECORDER”

The Schools have so far picked up all the three titles decided at the Colony Athletic Championships at Sookunpog over the wook-end. The first, the Shot Put Championship, went to Chan Wai-chuen of Pui Ching School, the secand, the 400 Metras Championship, to A. Collaco of La Salle College, and the third, the Ladies' 100: Metres, to Paoл Ching-woon of Pui To Girls School. They are unlikely to make a com- taking a plete sweep of the Championships, byt may well finish up lion's share of these.

In the deluge that came with the last event, six. schoolgirls ran for shelter through a pelting rain in the fastest time ever recorded in this Colony, the first two in becoming joint holders of the new record of 13.1 seconds. Despite spiked sles, they were slipping as they ran and under normal conditions could-have been much faster,

Second was South China's little Lam Kak-lan, caught at the tape as Poon Ching-woon shot forward in a last desperate plunge. Catching up at the finish was Deborah Hurlbatt, who ran through in 13.7 seconds to nip past Jennifer Hart, and Fok Wing-sheung, both of whom equalled the previous Championship best of 13.8, with Wong Yee-man, the previous record-holder in the event at 18.7, last.

Southeast Asian Athletic

Standards Go

Up With Philippine Olympic Bid

Southeast Asia's athletic standards have risen considerably over last year's, largely as a result of the effort being made by many Filipino athletes to win a trip to the Olympic Games and the considerable improvement over the past year in Taiwan's athletic standards.

Athletes of the year, without taking into account the season in Malaya just starting, are undoubtedly Tan Eng-long of Taiwan and Inocencia Solis of the Philip- pines.
