we had a pony?"

Hand shook her head sadly. "But we haven't got a pony, Knarf, I don't think we'll ever have a pony."

Just then, Mr Merlin the Magtelan came walking out of a door in a near-by tree-stump. Mr Merlin, who usually ore a red velvet suit and a long cape decorated with the

Oil Fruit

By Lee Priestley

THAT morning back in 1893,

the Dutch trader decided to warehouse a give the musty spring cleaning. For example, those nuts brought from. South America as ballest by some tramp trading vessel had clut- tored a comer long enough.

"What shall I do with the strange nuts, meinherr?" asked the servant.

Before answering the Dutch- man picked up one of brown, slightly curved nuts. He dropped it to the floor and cracked it with his heel. Then he looked curious- ly at the firm glossy kernel. He sniffed at it and rubbed a thumb over the oily feel of it. Then he tossed it out of the door.

--"Oink! Oink!" the pig"- explor-- Ing the dooryard for edible bits squented when the nut hit him. He smelled out the kernel in the short grass and crunched it with obvious enjoyment.

"LE

ET the pigs have the 'wild oil frull then!" the trader said with typical Dutch thrift. "The acorns are all gone now. Perhaps theso nut-like fruits will save me the price of corn."

So the pigs grew sleek and tot on the brown nuts. One day the ted the trader's son sent to porkers looked curiously ut, the "wild oll fruit." He wondered If they would be good for human frult. To be sure, a pig will eat anything. But so will a boy.

Persuaded by his son, the trader tried the nuts next and found them delicious. When he served them to guests they asked if they could buy more of the "wild oll fruit from Brazil,"

So that was the beginning of the nut gathering industry that

now

exports more than Atty tons yearly from

thousand Brazil.
