Mr Butler Calls For

Fresh Efforts To Save Country

London, Mar. 11. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Richard A. Butler, told the nation in a radio broadcast tonight that the new budget should give Britain new hope.

He stated that the budget should encourage the nation to make the great effort necessary to save the country. '.

He added that the budget did not seek to hide realities by letting the people think that things which, were. cheap-had. not to be dearly paid for by the state.

After announcing that the food subsidies had been reduced by almost half, Mr Butler pointed out. that the dis- guise which masked the real cost of imported food had been removed.

Mr Butler stressed that the budget was fair as it provided for excess profit tax which companies would pay under present conditions.

The Chancellor said that the increase in the rate of bank interest should stimulate exports and help to assure maintenance of full employ-

ment.
